Toys, comic books, motion pictures, television series, and video games are just some of the incarnations of the Transformers franchise that have found success in the marketplace. The first teaser for the upcoming film Transformers: Rise of the Beasts was released earlier this week, but we will redirect our focus to a massively multiplayer online game (MMO) project that is still in development by Certain Affinity.
Certain Affinity has been a supporting studio for many of the projects it has worked on since the company first opened its doors in 2006. Some of the projects they have worked on include downloadable content for games like Halo 2 and Call of Duty Black Ops, as well as the multiplayer modes for Doom 2016, to name just a few of the things they have done.
The crew has been working on the Transformers above Online project for a period that has not been made public.
As of earlier today, it appears like new hands will be working on the game shortly. According to a story published by Insider Gaming, the Transformers Online project has reportedly been sold to Splash Damage after having been in production for a few years (known for games like Dirty Bomb and the Gears of War series, from Ultimate Edition onward).
Both of these businesses are connected by the fact that Leyou, which is now wholly owned by Tencent, is the sole owner of Splash Damage and also holds a minority share (twenty percent) in Certain Affinity.
To confirm these reports, Splash Damage was approached; however, the same article states that the developer “cannot comment on rumors or conjecture.”
Previously, when we reported on the project much earlier, it was observed that the game drew similarities to titles like Destiny 2 and Warframe, with each Transformer having a playstyle and distinct skills. This was done to compare the game to other titles. Movement and tactical possibilities are also quite important in this game, just like they are in the MMOs that were described earlier.
Other game components include quests assigned to certain factions (Autobots and Decepticons, respectively), a crafting system, a wide variety of locales to investigate, and three distinct categories of weapons (Main, Utility, and Melee).
The research concludes that the internet project would go live sometime the following year, but it does not give any details on the platforms or release timeframe.
It may be released at the same time as the film, which is scheduled to debut in theatres in June 2023.
