Since its release one week ago, Overwatch 2 has been experiencing a few technical difficulties here and there. The multiplayer online shooter that is free to play has had issues with its chat function and character lockouts, but the rule that players must use SMS Protect is the one that has caused the most frustration among players.
Before beginning, players are required to attach a phone number to their account. However, players with pre-paid phones are unable to participate in the free game since their phones do not meet the requirements.
Blizzard maintains that the implementation of this security will assist in the elimination of smurf accounts (when a veteran makes a new account in order to play against less experienced people in ranked matches).
It is an unneeded approach to gate-getting into the game, especially considering that you cannot opt-out of the security feature that is being used, which is from the player’s perspective. It would appear that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will have the same difficulty level needed in order to play.
On the Battle.net phone notifications page, it is stated that “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, freshly established Overwatch 2 accounts, and newly created Call of Duty: Accounts require a phone number.” This was discovered by VGC. It would appear that this is a foregone conclusion; yet, given that there are still a few weeks left before the release of Modern Warfare 2, there is still room for things to shift and evolve.
However, in order to participate in the beta test for Modern Warfare 2 on a personal computer, players had to provide their phone numbers. This indicates that the functionality is likely here to stay for at least the foreseeable future.
Let’s keep our fingers crossed that this won’t turn into an ongoing issue given that Call of Duty, Overwatch, and Diablo will be added to Xbox Game Pass as a result of the acquisition of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft. It would be counterproductive to the purpose of Game Pass, which is to provide an easily navigable collection of games that offer unlimited playtime.
In any case, the release date for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is this coming Friday, October 28. It will be downloadable for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox One in addition to being playable on personal computers. Those who preorder the game digitally in any of its formats will have the opportunity to gain early access to the campaign.
